A couple weeks back I shared a little bit on Instagram about a recent cleansing experience and I received a TON of interest in my protocol. Well guess what?! I've decided to share it with you here!
I have enjoyed periodically cleansing, fasting and purifying my body for over 8 years now and it's completely changed my life. I've embarked on countless green juice feasts, water fasted, colon cleansed, completed 5 liver/gallbladder flushes and dabbled in parasite elimination as well. Detoxifying my temple has enabled me to lead a happier, more gratifying life. I've improved my digestion, mood and energy levels, even athletic abilities. I've healed depression, uterine issues and several skin conditions including eczema/psoriasis and acne. It's allowed me to maintain a balanced state of wellness and help others on their journeys. Above all, cleansing has led me into profound states of CLARITY and INSPIRATION. Because I take excellent care of my temple, I've been able to help others heal and transform their own lives. Cleansing, fasting and ultimately CARING for myself has lead me right into my passion and purpose ~ helping others heal and helping to heal our planet
So, onto the flush! Please keep in mind, if you are new to fasting and cleansing I recommend proceeding under the guidance of a trained professional or health coach for the first round. Fasting with a friend or a group can be helpful and supportive as well. Our bodies are so unique, as are our needs. THIS CLEANSE MAY OR MAY NOT BE FOR YOU. It's important to consider your current diet, nutritional needs and level of comfort with the steps mentioned below. This cleanse is geared toward the individual who has done some cleansing already, enjoys a relatively clean diet (high in organic, vegan, vegetarian or raw foods and very little to no processed foods) and has experience with various cleansing modalities. Essentially, this is an ADVANCED cleansing protocol.

Liver/ Gallbladder Flush Protocol
PREPARATION FOR THE CLEANSE:
Take time to EASE into your cleanse, by adjusting your diet in the week prior to beginning your fast and flush protocol. For the pre-cleanse period, enjoy a diet as close to “plant-based” as possible. Eliminate ALL processed foods, meat and dairy and make greens, veggies and fruits your go to!
Ingredients to Include: Fresh ORGANIC veggies & fruits, nut milks (try my Brazil Nut Milk recipe!), sprouted nuts & seeds, sea veggies (dulse, kelp, nori, etc), sprouted quinoa, millet or amaranth, healthy oils such as coconut oil and first cold pressed olive oil, sea salt, healthy sweeteners such as raw honey, grade A maple syrup, blackstrap molasses or stevia (best for those with candida yeast issues). Drink an abundance of green juice and fresh spring water (or any source of PURE water, reverse osmosis filtered, NOT tap). Stay away from plastic bottled water. Glass is best.
*A wonderful adjunct to support digestion is naturally fermented sauerkraut and/or kimchi with your savory meals, or coconut kefir and/or kombucha with your smoothies. These natural ferments have lots of probiotics, the good bacteria that digest our food. Just throw them in the blender with your raw soups and smoothies or drink the kefir and/or kombucha straight.
Ingredients to Avoid: Meat, dairy, gluten grains, eggs, beans & legumes, sodas and carbonated beverages, polyunsaturated veggie oils (corn, canola, soy, safflower, & sunflower), processed foods of any kind.
DAYS 1 & 2 OF YOUR CLEANSE:
Drink plenty of fresh, organic apple juice or 2 oz of apple cider vinegar diluted in 8 oz of water. The malic acid in the apple juice helps to soften stones and dissolve stagnant bile that may be present. I enjoy one gallon of apple juice over 3 days. A malic acid supplement is an optional replacement for apple juice and apple cider vinegar.
Additionally, I enjoy plenty of GREEN juices. You can juice any combination of the following organic ingredients: (kale, cucumber, celery, apple (preferably green), ginger, turmeric, parsley, dandelion greens, cilantro, lime/lemon, beets, spinach, arugula, bok choy, and any other dark, leafy green vegetables). Hot herbal teas are excellent to incorporate, specifically liver cleansing teas like: Dandelion Root, Chanca Piedra, Yellow Dock Root, Peppermint, Chicory and Milk Thistle. Always choose organic.
Do not eat anything during this time. Give the body a break from digestion and allow it to begin the healing process. You'll receive plenty of nourishment from the nutrients available in the green vegetable juices, and you're likely to have more energy than you anticipate. Allow yourself the time to rest, however. It's best to do the cleanse during a weekend, or a time when you do not have too many other obligations and can listen to your body and rest whenever necessary.
During the cleanse, I incorporate DAILY ENEMAS to assist in the elimination process, alleviate detox symptoms and expedite and enhance the cleansing effects of fasting. I HIGHLY recommend doing enemas and/or a colonic during the fast. You'll have more energy, release even more toxins from the body and feel MUCH better during and after it all. It's also a great way to eliminate addictions, jumpstart weight loss, increase your body’s absorption of nutrients and ensure proper digestive health. If you are new to enemas, please RESEARCH the benefits of this incredible practice. It could save you from colon cancer one day. If you are not comforable with doing an at home enema, a colonic is an excellent (and more thorough) substitute. Also highly recommended.
**Be sure to take a probiotic supplement after every enema or colonic to replenish the friendly bacteria in the gut. Drinking coconut water (rich in electrolytes) afterward is also a great idea.
An evacuative/laxative can be helpful as well. It’s important to keep things moving as the body begins to detoxify. You may want to acquire an oxygenated magnesium product, such as Oxy Mag or Oxy Powder. If you have access to an infrared sauna, utilize it! Sweating will help to further detoxify and heal the body.
DAY 3: IT’S TIME FOR THE FLUSH!
You will need:
This liver cleanse is best done on a day when there are no demands on the individual with a following day to rest and allow the cleansing process to take its full course - a weekend is a good idea. On that day avoid all unnecessary vitamins, supplements, pills etc. Stop drinking juices at 2:00 PM and just enjoy water or herbal tea from this point. This relaxes the organs before the cleanse. Drinking juice after this time will result in possible stomach upset and can interfere with the liver cleanse.
At 2:00 PM prepare the Epsom Salts. Mix 4 tablespoons of Epsom Salts in 3 cups of water and keep in a jar ready for the subsequently required doses of 3/4 cup per dose.
From this point on the timing is critical so be sure to precisely follow the times indicated.
At 6:00 PM it is time for the first serving of Epsom Salts with water. Shake well first, and drink 3/4 cup of the pre-prepped concoction. If more than one glass of water is needed to help rinse the mouth, that is fine.
At 8:00 PM it is time for the second serving of Epsom Salts and water. Shake well first, and drink another 3/4 cup of the pre-prepped concoction.
At 9:45 PM start preparing the oil and grapefruit cocktail. Measure 1/2 cup oil and 1/2 to 3/4 cup freshly squeezed grapefruit juice (or lemon juice) into a sealable glass jar. Remember that after drinking your oil and grapefruit cocktail you will be going to bed so prepare for bed and if you need to visit the bathroom do this in advance.
At this time you can also prepare your CASTOR OIL PACK. This is a SUPER important step of the process. Castor Oil has the ability to absorb 3 inches into the body and saturate tissues, easing inflammation, and lubricating stones.
To make a castor oil pack, fold undyed wool or cotton flannel (found at most health food stores) into about a 4”x5” square. Pour oil into a zip-lock bag and place the flannel inside, moving it until it is completely saturated with the oil. Place flannel over the liver and gall bladder on the lower part of your right rib cage and wrap your torso like a mummy with plastic wrap, a plastic bag or fabric and an ace bandage to keep it in place. Castor oil can be messy. (Wear clothes you don’t mind getting oily.) Make sure the pack isn’t dripping oil before you put it on, if so, squeeze a little out so it doesn’t get all over you! Place hot water bottle over the pack and rest. Packs can be worn throughout the day, even walking or to work if you have a good wrapping technique, no one needs to know. ]
Wearing the castor oil pack will help soften debris in the colon as well as in the liver and gall bladder. Castor packs account for much of the success of this cleanse so DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!

At 10:00 PM it is time to drink the oil and grapefruit juice combination. Break open 7-10 digestive enzymes (see recommended brands above) and add them to your concoction. This helps prevent discomfort and nausea. Before drinking it put the lid onto the jar it is in and shake it vigorously. This will make the oil and grapefruit juice almost emulsify. Only the fresh grapefruit/lemon juice will do this. For some, it is much easier to get this combination down drinking it through the glass/bamboo straw(s). I like to drink it out of a cup while keeping my nose plugged. Drink it standing up! You want the oil to go directly into the stomach and not linger in your throat. In general, it will be down in less than 5 minutes -15 minutes for the more sensitive.
Some will prepare a chaser in advance of freshly made lemonade (freshly squeezed juice of ripe lemons mixed with water, NO sweetener).
A little cinnamon in water makes a nice chaser. Or an additional 2 oz. shot of grapefruit juice.
After the combination has been swallowed go to bed right away. Lay on your right side to start with the hot water pack over the liver/gallbladder area and castor oil pack. Keep your head slightly elevated with pillows and be still for about 20 minutes and then go to sleep. At this point or at some point throughout the night it is not uncommon to actually feel the gall stones moving through the bile ducts.
Note I: The effect of the Epsom Salts is not insignificant. Epsom Salts are Magnesium Sulfate. From the herbal point of view both the magnesium and the sulfur are considered hot, expanding (centrifugal) or "heat expelling," therefore they provoke dilation. It makes sense that they, when ingested, will cause a mild dilation of the bile ducts as well as other vessels and the bowels to void. This means that fluids will flow more freely through the body when it is taken. Do not underestimate the need to be near a toilet when doing this cleanse using Epsom Salts. When you feel the need to "go" you can be sure it won't be just gas. The Epsom Salts will liquefy the bowel movement so, you are well advised to stay home and take no unnecessary chances or excursions.
Note II: This liver cleanse method uses Epsom Salts which to some are less palletable than the oil and grapefruit juice combination. To help make them easier to ingest they can be put into capsules and easily swallowed. Epsom salts are rather coarse. In their raw form it would not make sense to encapsulate them. Instead measure out one tablespoon of the salts and either grind them in a mortar and pestle or a coffee grinder until it is finely powdered and put them into capsules. One tablespoon of Epsom Salts makes about 24-25 hand filled capsules.
DAY 4: THE BIG RELEASE!
The next morning take another serving of the Epsom Salts no earlier than 6:00 AM. If there is any indigestion or nausea wait until it passes before taking the Epsom Salts. Some take a tablespoon of dry oats to help the nausea pass. It works rather quickly. If you wish you can go back to bed.
After 2 Hours the last dose of Epsom Salts is to be taken. If you wish to go back to bed you certainly may.
After 2 More Hours you can enjoy apple juice or a green juice. Drink water as needed, but be sure to stop drinking fluids an hour prior to your enema.
You may start releasing stones at any point in the morning/afternoon. Some curious individuals enjoy gathering the stones with chopsticks and investigating them. I was surprised to find that they are bright green (covered with bile) and hard and black on the inside. You can also look up pictures online.
At 2:00 PM prepare a coffee enema and enjoy the final release! In the five times that i’ve done this cleanse, I’ve always released the majority of my stones during the final coffee enema. It’s an IMPERATIVE step in the process. DO NOT SKIP! If you are new to enemas, embrace it and go for it! I can’t recommend them enough for overall health and well being.

Once you’ve completed your coffee enema, you can enjoy more juice or EASE back into eating solid foods. The best foods with which to break your cleanse are soups, vegetable purees, superfood smoothies, and steamed vegetable and gluten-free grain bowls. It is best to eat in this manner for the three days following your last day of juice fasting and flushing. Post-cleanse, don’t simply dive right back into old habits of making poor food choices, but take the opportunity to start anew, focusing your diet on plant-based, green vegetable-rich meals.
**Very important**: The days after you finish your juice cleanse should not be seen as calorie ‘make-up’ days, but as an opportunity to continue the detoxification process. At this point, your body has efficiently gotten rid of toxins and increased the functioning of its detoxification pathways (liver, intestine, kidney), making its ability to clear toxins that much more effective. Therefore, if you ease off of the cleanse with healing, easy-to-digest foods, you can further promote the clearance of toxins, thereby maximizing the effectiveness of the juice cleanse itself. This is something worth investing in, especially if your goal is to use this cleanse as a means for permanent changes, not simply a quick fix.
